Sri. Sathyanarayanan K, popularly known as Keyboard Sathya, is a renowned musician and guru. A pioneer in redefining Carnatic music on the keyboard, his sustained efforts have bridged modern technology with traditional art, evolving a distinctive approach that integrates the depth, nuances and aesthetics of the classical tradition. Sri. Sathya has been pivotal in establishing the keyboard as a Lead Melodic Instrument in Indian Classical Music.

In his musical career for 25 years, he has performed over 2,000 concerts in India and around the world giving solo recitals and collaborating with world-renowned artistes across various genres.. He has also released several music albums with leading audio companies in India.

 

Tutelage in Carnatic Music

• Initiated in music by his grandfather, Sri. Embar S. Sadagopan, in 1997, and continued under his mother, Smt. Lalitha, and uncle, Sri. Embar S. Kannan.

• Under the tutelage of Padma Shri awardee Kum. A. Kanyakumari since 2001.

• Under the tutelage of Padma Shri awardee Mandolin Sri. U. Shrinivas since 2001.

• Under the tutelage of Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna since 2009.

 

Tutelage in Western Music

• Formal Western keyboard initiation in 1999, at the age of 4, under Sri. Vidhyadhar.

• Formal piano training from 1999 under Smt. Rathie Masillamanie.

• Continued Western keyboard training from 2000 to 2005 under Sri. Alphonse.

 

Academic Qualifications

Contribution in Establishing Keyboard as a “Lead Melodic Instrument in Carnatic Music” in National and State-Level Government Institutions

• Performing on Doordarshan since 2003.

• Received All India Radio recognition for keyboard and was awarded a grade in 2010, at the age of 15.

• Recognised as an A Graded Artiste in 2014, at the age of 19, becoming the first artiste on keyboard to receive this recognition.

• Empanelment for Carnatic Keyboard with ICCR in 2017, at the age of 22, contributing to the establishment of the keyboard as a recognised lead instrument in Carnatic music and becoming the first Carnatic keyboard artiste to be empanelled.

• Performed the first National Programme of All India Radio for Carnatic Keyboard in 2017, at the age of 22.

• Received the Kalaimamani Award from the Tamil Nadu State Government in 2018, at the age of 23, becoming the first Carnatic keyboard artiste to receive the award and contributing to wider recognition of the keyboard as a category for Carnatic music.

 

Significant Contributions to Carnatic Music on Keyboard

• Creating an impact as a child artiste by making Carnatic music approachable through the keyboard across age groups.

• Establishing a distinctive “unique tone” for Carnatic Keyboard since 2005, which has been adopted by a majority of practitioners and artistes around the world.

• Establishing a recognisable bani (style) of music for Carnatic Keyboard and as an artiste.

• Creating techniques to play the intricate nuances required for Carnatic music.

• Introducing the “Gayaki” style of presentation, giving importance to sahithya and gamaka-s, especially through the use of advanced keyboard technology since 2006.

• Introducing the concept of left-hand chordal patterns for Carnatic Keyboard to provide a more harmonious experience in compositions and while playing tanam-s, similar to the tala strings played on a veena, since 2007.

• Evolving alongside technological advancements in the instrument and adapting it for Carnatic music, while reaching international audiences through unique instruments such as the ROLI Seaboard, Touché and Korg Nano Keys.

• Submitted a postgraduate dissertation on the subject, “Gamaka-s in Sangita Sampradaya Pradarshini and its Interpretation on Keyboard.”

• Utilising YouTube and other social media platforms to expand the reach of Carnatic music on keyboard since 2005.

• Diversifying into other genres such as Hindustani music, devotional music, film music and fusion music to widen the scope of the keyboard as a Lead Melodic Instrument.

• Setting a standard for the instrument and for an artiste performing Carnatic on Keyboard that has been recognised by thousands of organizations in India and internationally 

• Presented workshops and lecture in Carnatic Music on Keyboard at International & National level symposiums, music colleges and organisations in India and abroad since 2001
   

Creating a legacy

• Established KBS Inculcation in 2010 and training students to learn Carnatic Music on Keyboard 

• Hundreds of students have learnt with Sri. Sathya in India and globally. 

• Creating new finger techniques to get the dynamics and finest nuances of Carnatic Music for learners 

• Developing effective teaching methodology to understand the relationship of the instrument, technology and Carnatic music

• Creating new frontiers for Carnatic Keyboard artistes to follow and take it further

• Featured in the Limca Book of Records 2003 as the youngest Indian to pass the 4th grade Keyboard examination under Trinity College, London at the age of 6. 

• One of the youngest to have passed Grade 8 examination on Electronic Keyboard at the age of 10
